God Bless The Child is very subtle and cinéma vérité styled movie showing one summer day of the life of five children abandoned by their troubled mother. The story begins at the crack of dawn as Rebecca (mom) pulls away from the driveway completely ignoring her son running barefoot after her. His screams remain unanswered. The oldest one, Harper, a 13-year-old, has to take care of her 4 younger brothers. There is not much of a dialogue she can embark on with anybody but we know that it’s not the first time Rebecca took off forcing Harper to take her role. Harper is humble yet anxious whether mom is gone for good this time. Apart from daily chores, fun and taking care for one another, the children present a noticeable amount of aggression which is understandable given their unmet needs. God Bless The Child is a portrait, a documentation of one of the silent abuser, a negligence. It passes on quietly but the consequences speak louder than words.
